Farther Than the Moon by Lindsay Lackey

How I Heard About It:
*I so enjoyed All the Impossible Things by Lackey.  I was excited to see she had a new novel out.  The story was enjoyable, meaningful, and thoughtful.

What It Is About - FIVE Things You Need to Know:
*Houston is two things:  an astronaut lover and extremely lovable big brother to Robbie.

*Robbie has cerebral palsy, but that doesn't matter to Houston and he does everything he can to include and protect his younger brother.

*When Houston is accepted to an exclusive Junior Astronaut program he is thrilled, but know he will miss his brother immensely.

*While at the camp, Houston gets to know a whole group of similar kids and comes across an estranged relative he has never met.

*As much as he enjoys his time doing what he loves best, Houston can't quite stop missing and worrying about Robbie.

What I Thought Of It - Five Observations/Reflections:
*Houston's "journey" was not only academic, but personal and emotional.

*I enjoyed reading about his relationship with his brother Robbie, learning about cerebral palsy, and what it takes to be an astronaut.

*The family dynamics were unique, authentic, and full of heart.

*Houston's love and devotion to Robbie was such a special bond and revealed the true character of Houston.

*Themes of family, friendship, and standing up for what is right ran throughout the entire plot..

Who Should Read It:
*The story of Houston, Robbie, and all the adventures during the space program would be perfect for readers in grades four, five, and six.  I think it could make for a strong class read aloud and/or to put in the hands of individual readers.  Middle-school students will also enjoy the book.  Happy Reading!
