Shelter by Christie Matheson

How I Heard About It:
*This was one of three novels I recently received from Random House.  I didn't know much about this particular title, but was intrigued by the cover and title.  I read the story in one sitting and found it engaging.

What It Is About - FIVE Things You Need to Know:
*Maya is in fifth grade and keeping a secret from her classmates.

*Her family has fallen on hard times which has landed their father in the hospital and the rest of them in a homeless shelter.

*The story follows Maya one particular hard day in her life.

*She has to make her own way across town, survive a school day with a mean girl, and try to fit in as a "regular" girl in fifth grade.

*When Maya's backpack, with all her most special possessions, goes missing, she learns who her true friends are and who she can ultimately count on.

What I Thought Of It - Five Observations/Reflections:
*This was a well-written, strong and engaging middle-grade story.

*I thought it was unique to have an entire plot be based on one day in the life of a character.

*The author did a phenomenal job of putting the reader into the shoes of a homeless girl and all that surrounds that situation.

*As a teacher, I know children come to school with so much on their plates and this story addressed that in such a powerful and authentic way.

*Maya was fortunate that she had such a strong support system both at the shelter with her family and at school with friends she can depend on.

Who Should Read It:
*The novel would be best suited for readers in grades four, five, and six.  It would also be ideal for middle-school readers.  I think the book could be used for a class read aloud because several important life lessons and messages could be shared.  Happy Reading!
