How I Came Across It... *After reading a positive and glowing review about H.M. Bouwman's newest work of fiction in our local paper, I knew I had to purchase it and read it. Which is exactly what I did and I'm not happy I did. Such an enjoyable reading experience. What It's About - Five Things You Need to Know... *Peggy is a young girl living on a farm during the year 1941.
*Peggy has a best friend, and cousin, who is sick.
*Peggy meets a new boy who is living at "Scattergood", a hostile for Jewish refuges.
*Peggy meets an old professor who enjoys playing chess, also living at "Scattergood".
*Peggy sets out to help her cousin find a "cure" and enables the help of people who have always been in her life, and those of some of new and curious people that have come into her life. What I Thought of It - Five Observations/Reflections... *"A barn is almost the best place in the world to think, if you live on farm and have nowhere else to go." I was hooked from the first sentence to the last.
*This novel was beautifully written, thoughtful, and provided so much to think about.
*Peggy is the type of character you are drawn to immediately and she weaves her way into your heart.
*I enjoyed all of the special and unique relationships Peggy formed with those around her. She gave so much to them and they in return gave to her.
*The themes of perseverance, family, kindness, and helping others were strewn throughout the pages of the novel and forced me to think on several different levels. Who Should Read It... *Even though the novel is "geared" toward the middle-grade reader, I know the story would appeal to both the middle-school and even high-school reader. I also think any adult who enjoys middle-grade stories will fall in love with Peggy and all those who surround the area of "Scattergood". Happy Reading! Rating... 5 out of 5 stars
