The Ice House by Monica Sherwood

How I Heard About It:
*This middle-grade title came to me via the Little Brown Publisher.  The story will be released on November 16, 2021.

What It Is About - FIVE Things You Need to Know:
*A freeze has come and doesn't seem to be changing anytime soon.

*Louisa is snowed in her apartment with her family and she isn't sure how much longer she can endure the situation.

*Louisa has been attending school via the computer and wants to get back to real school.

*She is lonely and finds a new friendship with Luke, who actually was her best friend years earlier.

*When Luke's dad has an "ice" accident, the two friends build themselves an "ice house" and create a world where they can escape the hardship of what is going on in reality.

What I Thought Of It - Five Observations/Reflections:
*What an interesting premise of the "ice storm" trapping people at home.

*As I read, I couldn't help but connect the story line to the actual events of Covid-19.

*I enjoyed the characters of Louisa and Luke and the evolution of their friendship.

*There were a few times when the plot moved at a slower pace, but overall I enjoyed the story.

*We are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Minnesota Halloween storm and I found so many similarities between this storm and the real one back in 1991.

Who Should Read It:
*The Ice House could be shared with readers in grades three through five.  The story would make for a wonderful class read aloud.  Readers in grades six through eight will enjoy the story either on their own and/or as a class read aloud.  Happy Reading!
