An Inside Look with Lisa Yee

How did you come to know Olive?
Olive is a more talented, coordinated, and smarter version of me when I was a kid. However, at the same time, she rife with insecurities and fears, just like I was. Olive had always felt invisible -- however, I turned that upside down from being something she thought was a negative into a positive . . . especially when you are a super-secret undercover crime fighter!
What do you think Olive can offer to other children that are experiencing similar situations to what she went through?
Olive is an introvert, which is not to be confused with being shy. She underestimates herself – constantly, questions her worth, and is aware that others don’t think much of her. What she finds out is that what embarrasses her about herself are actually assets, and that she’s a person amazing skills and insights . . . and that there are those, like her fellow Misfits, who can clearly see that.
Do you and Olive share any similarities?
Olive and I both have overactive imaginations. The difference is, I sit behind a computer and type out action and adventures. Olive, is the one who actually brings them to life.
What was the hardest scene to write about her?
It was heartbreaking to write about her loneliness. She feels abandoned when she’s sent to the reforming arts school on Foggy Island, and she misses her grandmother who is “no longer with us.” Her despair was palpable and I wanted to hug her and say, “Hang in there, it’ll be okay!”
Who do you think was her biggest supporter and why?
By far it was Mimi, her grandmother, who is an extraordinary trapeze artist and tightrope walker. She passed these skills onto her only granddaughter and taught Olive that fear can be a good thing – because it keeps you on your toes.
What do you think Olive is doing at the present time?
I know as a fact that she is celebrating another successful undercover assignment. And that Olive is looking at her friends and marveling at how lucky they all are to have found each other and created their own little family of Misfits.
