Hardscrabble Road by George Weinstein

How I Heard About It:
*After some browsing online for a new audio book, I came across this title.  I did a bit or research and decided to download the title on Audible.

What It Is About - FIVE Things You Need to Know:

*The story centers around young Bud MacLeod who lives in Georgia during the depression.

*His family is poor and full of secrets which makes life hard for Bud.

*Bud also has a stutter and birthmark that makes him stand out even more than he already does.

*Bud's father is an evil man and his mother has issues of her own.  Growing up, Bud learns to depend on himself with the support of his brothers.

*There is a family secret that everyone tries to hide from Bud, but there will come a time when he finds out the truth and must decide what to do with it.

What I Thought Of It - Five Observations/Reflections:
*I've listened to lots of audible books and found this one to be so-so as far as the narration went.

*The overall plot moved quite slowly and I think if I were reading the book, I would have abandoned the novel, but I decided to keep listening.

*Besides the family "secret", there wasn't a whole lot that happened in the story.

*Bud was an amazing character and the strongest aspect of the book.

*The author did a great job of putting the reader in the heart of the south with family struggling on several levels.

Who Should Read It:
*This is definitely a novel for adult readers who enjoy character-driven stories,.  There isn't a whole lot of action, but a story about a young boy struggling to make the best of a difficult life.  Happy Reading!
