Pocket Bear by Katherine Applegate

How I Came Across It... *As are most teachers and students, I'm a huge fan of Katherine Applegate and her books. When I found out she had a new middle-grade novel being released, I ordered a copy so I had it as soon as possible. What It's About - Five Things You Need to Know... *Pocket Bear began during WWI as a companion to the soldiers. He could fit neatly in their pocket.

*Years later he ends up in the "Second Chances Home for Tossed and Treasured".

*This is a place where discarded and found toys end up hoping for another chance in life.

*Pocket Bear has a friend in a cat who brings the left over toys to their home where they reside and rely on each other.

*When Berwon appears at Second Chances, the toys come together to create a situation that is best for their new friend and the ones that surround him.

What I Thought of It - Five Observations/Reflections... *A unique and special story.

*I so enjoyed the cat character and her narration. Such humor and warmth.

*The toy characters were larger than life and jumped off each and every page.

*There are several important life-lessons presented throughout the story which would lead to some great and meaningful discussions.

*As with all of Katherine Applegate's novels, this is sure to become a classic and a gem for all young readers.

Who Should Read It... *I think this story would make for a strong and powerful class read aloud. It could be used in grades three, four, and five. I also think students in middle-school would also enjoy the story of the bear, the cat, and the other toy characters. Happy Reading! Rating... 4 out of 5 stars
