How I Heard About It:
*My author friend Erin Soderberg Downing sent me an ARC of her upcoming middle-grade novel, Controlled Burn. The book will be released on November 1, 2002. I was thrilled to receive the book, read the story, and enjoy the writing of Erin.
What It Is About - FIVE Things You Need to Know:
*The story starts with a real "burn". Maia is home with her younger sister Amelia when a fire starts in the house.
*Maia feels responsible because she realizes it was her candle that began the fire.
*Amelia ends up in the hospital, and Maia finds herself in northern Minnesota with her grandparents. Her family thinks it will be better for her since they will be spending so much time at the hospital with Amelia.
*Upon arrival, Maia isn't so sure staying with her grandparents is the best idea since all she can think about is her younger sister and how the healing process is going.
*Amelia is forced to face her "demons" while spending time with her grandfather out in the woods at his fire tower and getting to know a young boy who lives nearby.
What I Thought Of It - Five Observations/Reflections:
*I was drawn in right from the get-go. Probably one of the best first chapters I've read.
What I Thought Of It - Five Observations/Reflections:
*I was drawn in right from the get-go. Probably one of the best first chapters I've read.
*Reading about Maia and her journey to northern Minnesota was interesting and intriguing.
*The grandparent characters were a major focal point and strength of the story. Every kid deserves to have grandparents like these two.
*Erin did an extraordinary job of bringing the reader inside the character of Maia and letting us know exactly what she was feeling and going through.
*I've loved all of Erin's stories, but this one had a different "feel" to it and was a powerful story of resilience, survival, and growth.
Who Should Read It:
*When the novel is released in November 2022, this will be the perfect story for all fourth, fifth, and sixth grade classrooms. Students in middle-school will also find great satisfaction with the story. Happy Reading!
Rating: 5 STARS out of 5 Stars
