Light Comes to Shadow Mountain by Toni Buzzeo

How I Heard About It
*I was in the market for a new audio book and came across this middle-grade title.  After a bit of "research", I decided to download the title via Audible and give the historical fiction story a try.

What It Is About - FIVE Things You Need to Know:
*The reader is introduced to the main character Cora Mae Tipton who is living in a small mountain village of Kentucky in the year 1937.

*Cora is a smart, strong, young lady who has learned that electricity has come to the bigger cities and would love to see her own town get electricity.

*Cora begins her "fight" for electricity at school, but finds more resistance to the new invention in her own home.

*Cora's mother is against electricity coming to their "holler" because she doesn't want their ideal life to change.

*After an issue with Cora's mother's pregnancy, Cora must step up and not only help her mother, but that of the unborn child as well.

What I Thought Of It - Five Observations/Reflections:
*This was an enjoyable listen with a strong narrator.

*Cora was an interesting and unique character to get to know.  She was fierce!

*Reading about life in Kentucky back in 1937 and eye-opening and refreshing.  Boy life was a lot more simple back then.

*There were a few slow parts of the plot, but once Cora's mother went into labor, the action picked up.

*I think young readers would find the story line fascinating and be in awe of the simplicity of life and how inexpensive things were back in the 1930's.

Who Should Read It:
*This historical fiction novel would be most appropriate for readers in grades four, five, and six.  The story would also appeal to middle-school readers.  I'm thinking the book would be most beneficial as a class read aloud because so many great discussions would come from Cora's life.
