How I Heard About It
*After reading several positive reviews of the middle-grade novel, I decided to obtain a copy and read the story for myself.
What It Is About - FIVE Things You Need to Know:
*After Dory's father leaves to fight in WWII, she and her two brothers are left to live on their own.
*They are lucky to have the "neighborhood" to help them get by.
*While dining at the local restaurant, Dory discovers a whole "world" on the upper floors of the building.
*When a new landlord takes over the building Dory and her siblings are living in, he begins to ask questions about where their father is.
*Dory convinces her brothers to use the abandoned floors above the restaurant to "hide" until it is safe and their father returns home from the war.

What I Thought Of It - Five Observations/Reflections:
*I found Dory's story to be interesting, engaging, and heartfelt.
*The author did a phenomenal job of bringing the reader in the New York world during WWII.
*Dory's adventures within the hidden floors of the building was both fascinating and a bit creepy at times.
*I so enjoyed how the community came together and supported these three young characters. I could really feel the closeness and support they offered.
*This was a top-notch historical fiction story that I know young readers are going to enjoy.
Who Should Read It:
*If you have historical fiction readers in your life, this is the novel for them. Students in grades four, five, and six would be perfect, along with middle-school kids. I think it would also make for a strong class read aloud because there would be so much to discuss. Happy Reading!
