*This was our most recent book club selection for the BBC (Boy's Book Club). This is a group of male teachers that I work with. One of the members of the book club chose this novel for our January read. I had read some of Jojo Moyes' previous novels and enjoyed them so I was curious to read her newest novel. I listened to the story via Audible.
What It Is About - FIVE Things You Need to Know:
1. *English Alice marries American Bennett trying to escape her life in England. She hopes life in America can offer her everything she has been looking for.
2. *As Alice tries to adjust to life in Kentucky, she realizes she may have made a huge mistake. Her life becomes even more "stressful" under the watchful eye of her new father-in-law.
3. *When Alice learns of a group of women who are forming a group of "traveling" librarians", daily life becomes more bearable.
4. *Alice becomes friend with local Margery, and the two of them form a special bond even though they couldn't be more different from each other.
5. *After a man is found dead, Margery is charged with his murder, and none of the townspeople will ever be the same.
What I Thought Of It - Five Observations/Reflections:
1. *The narrator of the story was quite good, easy to listen to, and portrayed each character with strong personality and emotion.
2. *I loved the story of the group of women who brought books to the people in the remote sections of Kentucky. They brought such joy to the readers.
3. *Margery and Alice's friendship was quite special and each women helped their friend in the most incredible ways.
4. *Jojo Moyes did a tremendous job of bringing to life a varied cast of characters that had both positive and negative qualities.
5. *The plot moved at a perfect pace and kept me interested in the story the entire "reading/listening" experience.
Who Should Read It:
*If you have read any of Jojo's earlier works of fiction, then I highly recommend this historical fiction novel. I know you will enjoy it. If you haven't read any of them, this novel would be the perfect book to start with. I can't imagine any reader not enjoying it. Happy Reading!
