What It Is About: There are two stories going on in this novel. Alice is married to Jake and they live in Texas and run a barbecue restaurant. They have tried to have children, but with no luck. They have also tried adoption, but have not had any luck there either. Alice tries to fill this "void" but finds it very difficult. She begins to "mentor" a young high school girl at the local school that draws students that have a tough life. Meanwhile, Carla is a young girl living in Honduras with her grandmother because her own mother has left for a better life in Texas. After the grandmother dies and life becomes violent, Carla decides she and her younger brother need to leave Honduras and join their mother in Texas. Her journey across the borders isn't an easy one and Carla wonders if she has made the right choice in trying to make a better life for herself After a life changing event on the "road", Carla's life will change forever. Both Carla and Alice will make the best of their situations and move closer and closer toward each other.
What I Thought Of It: I'm not a huge fan of novels where two separate stories are taking place, but it worked alright with this story. I preferred Carla's story to Alice's, but overall I enjoyed the plot. I kept thinking how the two lives would eventually come together, and was quite surprised as to how the two women finally came into each other's lives. It was enjoyable to learn about the cultures of Honduras and Texas being that I haven't read much about those two "lives."
Who Should Read It: I have not read anything else by this author, but it appears she has written other works of fiction. If you have read her other works, you will probably enjoy this story. Adults that enjoy a good fiction story about making your life better, will also enjoy this novel. Happy Reading!
