In the Key of Us by Mariama J. Lockington

H
ow I Heard About It:
*This middle-grade novel came to me via the publisher for my committee work.  (Farrar, Straus and Giroux - BYR)

What It Is About - FIVE Things You Need to Know:
*Andi has lost her mother and is living with her aunt and uncle who are expecting a child of their own.

*Zora is heading toward being a flute prodigy, at least if her parents have their way.

*Both girls attend a summer music camp, but for very different reasons.

*Andi and Zora find themselves the only two black girls in a sea of white musicians.

*While at the camp, they form a special friendship, come to terms with their past experiences, and look toward a future where they can be their true selves.

What I Thought Of It - Five Observations/Reflections:
*I listened to the story via Audible and throughly enjoyed the experience.

*The author did a wonderful job of putting the reader into the lives of each of these girls.

*It was interesting to learn how Andi and Zora's past brought them to the summer camp and affected how they interacted with each other.

*I enjoyed the flashbacks that gave more insight to each of the characters.

*Many important life lessons were presented and handled with honesty, grace, and truth.

Who Should Read It:
*Any lovers of music and "band camp" will completely enjoy the adventures of these two girls.  Being heavy on female topics, issues, and struggles, the plot may appeal to the girl reader a bit more.  I would say the age range would be grade five and above.  Happy Reading!
