This Was Our Pact by Ryan Andrews

How I Heard About It:  This title came to my attention via a variety of sources and people.  After many mentions of the title, I knew it was time to check it out.  This graphic novel was "unputdownable"!!!

What It Is About - FIVE Things You Need to Know:
1.  *During the Autumn Equinox Festival, members of a town put paper lanterns in the river.

2.  *A group of boys decide to follow these lanterns to see where they actually "go" and end up.

3.  *Ben and his buddies make a "pact" that they will not turn around once they begin and they will not look back.  This doesn't necessarily come true.

4.  *Ben is surprised to find a boy that doesn't really fit in, biking besides him and taking their "oath" to the bitter end.

5.  *These two boys experience quite the night as they follow the lanterns to once and for all find out if they truly do travel to the sky and the stars.

What I Thought Of It - Five Observations/Reflections:
1.  *With a mix of realism and magical realism, this story was like no other.

2.  *I was drawn into the graphic novel on page one.  At first I thought it was going to be a journey of boys daring to experience a night of discovery, but soon realized they adventure was going to break the barriers of reality.

3.  *I'm not necessarily a fan of fantasy and magic, but these elements certainly worked for the story.

4.  *I was captivated by the variety of characters the two boys met during the night as they were unique and fascinating.

5.  *Not only did the two boys take a literal journey, but they also learned quite a bit from each other about their lives and what they truly stand for.

Who Should Read It:
I know so many young readers who will devour this graphic novel.  In my opinion, the age group best for the story would be fourth, fifth, and sixth graders.  Middle-school readers would also enjoy the story of Ben and his night of mystery.  Happy Reading!

Rating:   4 STARS out of 5 Stars
