The Road to After by Rebekah Lowell

How I Heard About It:
*Publisher Nancy Paulsen sent me an ARC of this upcoming middle-grade novel in verse.  The book will be out in the world in May of 2022.  This is a story NOT to be missed.

What It Is About - FIVE Things You Need to Know:
*Lacey lives with her father, mother, and younger sister.

*She knows their life is different from others, but isn't aware of just how different.

*That is, until one day her mother, with the help of her grandparents, pack up their few belongings and "escape" to freedom.

*At first Lacey isn't sure how to exist in the new world of freedom and choices and struggles to make sense of their new beginning.

*With the help of her mother, grandparents, younger sister, and a few friends along the way; Lacey finds beauty, peace, and safety in the real world.

What I Thought Of It - Five Observations/Reflections:
*I started the book on a Saturday afternoon, and didn't stop reading until I finished the last page.

*Although the text on each page was spare, there was so much content and subject matter on each and every page.

*The events in Lacey's life were difficult to read, but Rebekah Lowell handled these events with care, dignity, and grace.

*As Lacey began to see the world in a new light, I found myself appreciating all the beauty in the simple things in life.

*The story showed the power of healing and the possibility of a real life after heartache and pain.

Who Should Read It:
*I know this will be a very special story for particular young readers.  Lacey's story will shown them they are not alone and there is always hope at the end of the road.  I would say readers in grades five and above would be the appropriate audience for the story.  Happy Reading!
