An Inside Look with Adrianna Cuevas

How did you come to know Cumba?
Cumba is based on my father, so I guess you could say I came to know him pretty early on in my life. ;) But as I interviewed my dad about his childhood, as I talked to other family members about their immigration experiences, and as I read books by other Cuban-American authors, Cumba began to take shape as a character in his own right. He embodied bits and pieces of all the people I spoke to and the research I had done.
What do you think is his most admirable quality?
Cumba could have easily let his cynicism overtake him. He could have become very pessimistic about the situation in which he found himself. But, despite moments where he thinks the worst, Cumba still hangs on to the smallest shred of hope that he'll see his family again. I think it's admirable to see the tiniest bit of light when you are facing darkness.
What do you think Cumba can offer to other children that are experiencing similar situations to what he went through?
For students who find themselves in a similar situation to Cumba, I hope they will see that it's okay to ask others for help. It's perfectly acceptable to feel overwhelmed and sad. Those are valid emotions that they shouldn't have to cover up. Because in the end, I hope they see that there are people around them who will lift them up and support them.
How did you research Cumba and the circumstances he found himself in?
I interviewed my father about his childhood experiences, I interviewed family members who immigrated to the US from Cuba, and I read books by other Cuban-American authors who came to the US around the same time my dad did.
What was the hardest scene to write about him?
The most difficult scene to write was when Cumba said goodbye to his family in the Havana airport before he left for the United States. I couldn't help but think what my father must have been feeling at that moment, knowing he might not ever see his family again as he headed toward a place that was completely unknown to him.
Who do you think was his biggest supporter and why?
Cumba's biggest supporter when he first arrived in the United States was definitely Prima Benita, the family member who took him in. She gave him a sense of familiarity and security in a new and unsettling world.
Why do you think some young people are often more resilient than the adults around them?
Young people are less likely to be set in their ways and are more open to adapting to change. I don't think adults give them enough credit for being able to handle new situations.
