The Vegetable Museum by Michelle Mulder

How I Heard About It:  This title came to me via the publisher.  I was taken in by both the cover and the title.

What It Is About - FIVE Things You Need to Know:
1.  *Chloe knows that her parents are having difficulties in their marriage.  Even with this knowledge she is surprised when her father takes her to live near her grandfather.  Her mother stays behind.

2.  *Chloe and her father rent an apartment across the street from her grandfather.  Chloe doesn't know this man, but is willing to take the time to get to know her relative.

3.  *While her father is busy, Chloe and her grandfather Uli get to know each other.  At first she thinks is a bit strange and eccentric.  The more time she spends with him, the more she is intrigued by his story.

4.  *She learns that he has been collecting seeds from a variety of people in his life.  These are not your typical vegetable seeds, but exotic seeds that he plants in his own personal garden.

5.  *After a family tragedy, Chloe takes it on herself to learn about the relationship between her father and grandfather while tending to the garden Uli began.

What I Thought Of It - FIVE Observations/Reflections:
1.  *This was a sweet and simple little story.

2.  *I thought it was interesting that Chloe traveled with her father instead of the mother.  Usually it is the other way around.

3.  *The relationship between Chloe's father and grandfather held the most mystery and interest for me.

4.  *The overall plot moved at a slow and non eventful pace.  I'm not sure it would hold the interest of young readers.

5.  *There were a few sad and heartfelt moments, but generally I was not moved emotionally.

Who Should Read It:   I'm not sure who would be the best audience for this story would be.  There is a strong emphasis on seeds, plants, and gardens.  I'm just not sure there are many children who would "buy" into this focus.  It may make for an alright class read aloud where some discussion could be had.  Happy Reading!
