The True History of Lyndie B. Hawkins by Gail Shepherd

How I Heard About It:  After hearing and reading several positive reviews about this novel, I decided to download it via Audible and enjoy the story on my commute to and from work.

What It Is About - FIVE Things You Need to Know:
1.  *Lyndie's father is a Vietnam veteran who is now home and suffering from PTSD and alcoholism.

2.  *Lyndie can't quite figure out what is going on in her family, but she does know that her grandmother wants to keep the family "business" behind closed doors.

3.  *She would lean on her mother, but she is dealing with her own "issues" and isn't exactly available.

4.  *Lyndie turns to her BFF, Dawn, and a new boy in school named DB.  The three of them work together both in and out of school to find the answers they are looking for.

5.  *Lyndie works hard to keep events in her family under wraps, but finds this is not an easy task.  She also learns that DB and his family have their own secrets.

What I Thought Of It - Five Observations/Reflections:
1.  *Lyndie would be the kind of friend all young people deserve.  She was bigger than the page, and came through the audio loud and clear.

2.  *As I listened, I would feel her heartache, confusion, and frustration with the goings-on in and out of her family.

3.  *I appreciated the sensitivity the author gave regarding PTSD, alcoholism, and other life issues.

4.  *DB was also a character that I truly appreciated and he brought so much "life" to the entire story.

5.  *The narration was excellent and held my interest the entire read/listen.

Who Should Read It:
This novel would be best suited for readers in grades five and six.  I would also imagine that middle-school readers would be able to enjoy and relate to Lyndie's story line.  Strong and excellent class discussions could come from the use of this middle-grade novel.  Happy Reading!

Rating:   4 STARS out of 5 Stars
