Honey by Sarah Weeks...

How I Heard About It:  A few months back I saw a Tweet that Sarah Weeks was coming out with a new book called Honey.  I added it to my list of books I wanted to read.  I had used Pie several years ago for my student book club and was excited to see that a new book of hers was coming out.  I read it over this past weekend.

What It Is About:  Melody is a young girl living with her father.  Her mother died when she was a baby.  Melody's best friend is Nick.  Melody also has a pesky little neighbor girl that just wants to be friends with her.  When Melody realizes her father might have a new love interest (honey) in his life, she begins to follow the case to "solve" the mystery.  All of the secrets she is about to discover unfold in the local beauty salon where the owner is known for her "crazy" hair and the many different nail polishes she creates.  The salon also is the home to a dog named Mo that has his own story to tell.  These two stories will come together in the most surprising of ways.  Melody just has to decide if she wants to find out about her father's secret named "Honey."

What I Thought Of It:  I can't remember all the details of Pie, but do remember loving the story so much that I picked it for a book club selection.  This story was just as wonderful as Pie.  It is a delightful little novel with larger than life characters that spring off the page.  I enjoy how these stories are free of "bad things" and the small-town stories unfold with each page.  The plot was delightful and the mystery was fun to follow.  I'm already thinking of using this book for a spring "Breakfast with Books" selection.

Who Should Read It:  I love when I find a novel that isn't over two hundred pages.  Some of my readers just can't handle a long book like that.  This is the perfect size and length for our readers in third and fourth grade.  The story line would also appeal to readers in higher grades.  I also think it would make a perfect read aloud for students in grades two through five.  If you haven't experienced a Sarah Weeks book, then is a perfect one to start with.  Happy Reading!
