Not an Easy Win by Chrystal D. Giles

How I Heard About It:
*I picked up this ARC during #NCTE22 in California.  I also heard the author speak during a session.  I read Chrystal Giles' first novel so I was excited to see what she had in store for the reader with her sophomore book.

What It Is About - FIVE Things You Need to Know:
*Lawrence hasn't had an easy time of it.

*After one too many fights, he is expelled from school which doesn't make his mother or granny too happy.

*As an alternative to attending public school, Lawrence begins attending online classes while also attending the local recreation center to help out a neighbor guy.

*While spending time at the rec center, Lawrence takes notice of the chess program that is being developed for the young people who attend the center.

*Wanting to make a change in his life, Lawrence takes interest chess and is determined to make a name for himself.

What I Thought Of It - Five Observations/Reflections
*Chrystal Giles has a way of taking the reader and putting them smack dab in the middle of her story.

*I so enjoyed reading about Lawrence, his struggles, and desire to improve his life situation.

*The themes of family, friendship, and staying true to yourself were presented in the most wonderful way.

*Not only was Lawrence an incredible character, but the supporting characters at the recreation center were so authentic and engaging.

*I certainly wasn't a chess enthusiast, but after reading the novel, I'm much more intrigued.

Who Should Read It:
*A perfect story for young people in grades four through eight.  If you know of any reader who has an interest in chess, then this is definitely the story for them.  The novel will be released on February 28, 2022.  Happy Reading!
