A Perfect Mistake

by Kyle Lukoff

(April 12, 2022)

How did you come to know Annabelle?
I didn't know who Annabelle was until I figured out her voice. The first time I tried to write this story it was in a very flat third person, but in other forums I love writing in a breathless, run-on style. I decided to try re-writing the first paragraph from that perspective, an extremely hyper and slightly befuddled "I," and she immediately became clear to me.

What do you think is her most admirable quality?
Her curiosity, and her determination to treat other people right.

Is there anything you wish she would have changed or done differently in her story?
Well, since I wrote the book, if I had wanted her to do something differently I would have written it differently! But assuming that we're pretending she is a real person, I still don't think I would have her change anything. She makes some mistakes, but that's all part of being a person, and I think she learns well from those mistakes.

What do you think Annabelle can offer to other children that are experiencing similar situations to what she went through?
I don't know! A belief I hold about books is that you take from them what you bring to them. So anything someone learns from Annabelle would be something they're already mulling over, even subconsciously.

How did you research Annabelle and the circumstances she found herself in?
I didn't, really. This was the first book I had to finish before a deadline, so most of the details (the school setting, the location, the identities) were all things I was very familiar with already.

Do you and Annabelle share any similarities?
Yes! She is a happier version of what I was like as a kid (and in some ways her inner monologue is still very similar to my own).

What was the hardest scene to write about her?
It took me a long time to resolve her crush on Bailey. Once I figured out how to do so it was easy to write, but it took a lot of brainstorming to get there.

Who do you think was her biggest supporter and why?
Her mom, I think.

Why do you think some young people are able to accept others who may be different from themselves with open arms and heart, while others are closed minded, and stuck in their own world?
I think, like literally everything else about someone's personality, it is a combination of both experience and innate selfhood, which is another way of saying "nature and nurture" but using words that feel more appropriate. It is also something that can definitely change over time, both in smaller course corrections and major epiphanies.

What do you think Annabelle is doing as the present time?
I could tell you but that would spoil the plot of the next book I want to write.
