An Inside Look with Gillian McDunn
*Season #SIX (Summer 2019)
How did you come to know Bex?
Bex is a character who has lived in my heart for a very long time. She’s a writer and shes fiercely loyal, loves the outdoors and adventure, and is very protective of her quiet and shy little brother, Davey.
What do you think is her most admirable quality?
Bex is willing to tackle a problem even when the resolution doesn’t come easily. Among other things, she struggles with writer’s block and is determined to find a solution and see it through.
Is there anything you wish she would have changed or done differently in her story?
I would like to encourage her to have a more open mind about stories that might make her cry or have big feelings, but I do respect her point of view.
What do you think she can offer to other children that are experiencing similar situations to what she went through?
Bex and I both had pivotal experiences happen when we were eleven years old. I hope that this story stays in readers’ hearts and shows a way of working through some big feelings.
How did you research Bex and the circumstances she found herself in?
I spent some time in the Carolina saltmarsh so I could experience it first hand. I also did a lot of research about underwater sculpture parks, ephemeral art, and life in the saltmarsh by reading articles and watching YouTube videos.
Do you and Bex share any similarities?
Bex and I are both writers who care strongly about younger siblings. We also share the strength of sensitivity. Some people are quick to criticize people who are sensitive and feel things deeply, but it is a necessary trait for writers/artists.
What was the hardest scene to write about her?
There are a few chapters where some of the threads of the book come together. The chapters are very powerful and emotional. I often mind myself shaking when reading the pages—same for when I was writing and revising them!
Who do you think was her biggest supporter and why?
I don’t want to give spoilers, but Bex has a lot of support and love on the island even if she doesn’t always see it for what it is. I do like the changes that her friendship with Millie goes through in the course of the book.
Why do you think young people, like Bex, have different coping strategies, after experiencing difficult situations, than the adults around them?
I think we all find coping strategies when we are trying to make sense of the world. Many times children try to handle big things on their own because they are concerned about worrying their parents or those around them.
What do you think Bex is doing at the present time?
I hope that she’s writing and still enjoying days spent in the marsh.
