*Season #SIX (Summer 2019)
How did you come to know Rami?
Once I understood that the story was really going to be about the mystery of self-discovery, figuring out who you are and how to share that with other people, how to connect with other people--I found Rami. He was the perfect character to help me explore those themes.
What do you think is his most admirable quality?
The fact that he is so observant. He notices things that other people often overlook, and he sees the world in a unique way because of that.
Is there anything you wish he would have changed or done differently in his story?
Oh gosh! Of course I wish he had more confidence in himself, but if he did, we wouldn't really have the same story, would we?
What do you think Rami can offer to other children that are experiencing similar situations to what he went through?
I hope he can show them that they aren't alone. That they deserve to be seen in all of their complexity. That their voices and ideas matter. That sometimes the thing that makes you feel different is actually the thing that in the end you may admire the most about yourself. That people want to hear what you have to say and share. I also hope they see the power in being represented in art and stories, and how art and stories can help us to connect with one another.
How did you research Rami and the circumstances he found herself in?
I did a lot of research about the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum heist. I'm obsessed with it! And I re-read a lot of my favorite books from when I was a kid (The Mixed Up Files of Mrs Basil E. Frankweiler, The Westing Game, etc) to get inspired to write in an expansive, arch + whimsical third person voice.
Do you and Rami share any similarities?
Yes! I was deeply insecure as a child, and often felt invisible.
What was the hardest scene to write about him?
The scene where he talks about how his old friends ditched and rejected him. That's such a painful experience--friendship break-ups--and it brought up a lot of hard memories from my own childhood.
Who do you think was his biggest supporter and why?
Ooh, I think that's a tie between his mother and Veda. His mother quietly encourages him by modeling how to be comfortable in your skin, make your own art, observe the world and be curious. And Veda really sees him, and helps to pull him out of his shell.
Why do you think some young people can show such resilience, strength, and courage during difficult life situations; sometimes even more than the adults in their lives?
Young people are amazing. They have so much grit. I think it's because being young is really hard. You are figuring out who you are. You are figuring out what you have to say and how you want to say it. This is tough work. But I think going through that every day prepares them well to be resilient in tough life situations. They are so focused on becoming--on the present moment--and that energy helps to move them forward.
What do you think Rami is doing at the present time?
I hope he is making art, and I hope he is sharing it with his friends, like Veda. I also hope he is visiting Agatha sometimes.
