An Inside Look with Kate O'Shaughnessy

How did you come to know Fern?
I came to know the setting first, and Fern second. Readers may not know that Driftaway Beach is heavily inspired by Rockaway Beach, which is a real Northern California neighborhood in Pacifica, CA. I went there for the first time to meet a friend for a hike at nearby Mori Point a few years ago, and I swear, within minutes of arriving in Rockaway Beach, I was so inspired that I felt the story gears whirring. There was a cute little teashop, a seaside motel with a parking lot that had the most dramatic and immediate view of the ocean, little shops and restaurants. There was something so magical about it, and I knew I wanted to set a story there; if not there exactly, then in a place heavily inspired by it. On the drive home, it was all I could think about. And I couldn’t get the idea out of my head that this little seaside town was the destination of a mother and a daughter escaping something, running away from some dark and murky past. That’s when Fern and her mom came into existence. It wasn’t until months later that I figured out what and who they were escaping from, and as soon as I had that piece, the story unfurled from there.
What do you think is her most admirable quality?
Her curiosity and desire to learn. In the end, it’s what saves her, really.
Is there anything you wish she would have changed or done differently in her story?
Of course. I love Fern and I wish her journey had been easier for her. But at the same time, every step was necessary.
What do you think Fern can offer to other children that are experiencing similar situations to what she went through?
In this day and age, we’re constantly being bombarded by information, and unfortunately, a lot of it false. I want kids to see the importance of research and facts and sources—and the importance of a library card! I want kids to know that even if an adult in power is telling them otherwise, they’re in charge of what they think and believe; they’re in charge of their own minds. I think realizing this is the first step to feeling truly empowered. And I want that for everyone, kids and adult alike.
How did you research Fern and the circumstances she found herself in?
I read and watched a ton of books and documentaries about cults and cults of personality. They’ve always been a subject of intense fascination for me, but I really put my research hat on for this book. I spent a lot of time on the psychology of it. I also wanted to create a community that was founded on tenets that I really believe in, to show how a bad actor with power can spoil something good. So for the Ranch, this was regenerative environmental practices, an emphasis on close-knit community, living lightly on the land.
Do you and Fern share any similarities?
Oh, hmm! You know it’s funny, I haven’t really thought about that. I do try to put a tiny, itty little bit of myself in every character I write, even the villains. I think a fun—albeit small—similarity we share is that we both love the book The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. I give a couple of little easter-eggy hints in the text, but this is the book that her mom gives to her in the beginning of the story.
What was the hardest scene to write about her?
This is a bit of a spoiler, but trying not to give too much away, toward the end of the book, Fern decides to go somewhere with someone she considers a trusted adult. The whole time I was writing it I was like, no Fern! Please don’t do it! But then like all good characters, she went and did it anyway.
Who do you think was her biggest supporter and why?
Without a doubt, her mom. This isn’t to say her mom is perfect—she isn’t, by a long shot. She’s made some very bad decisions in the past. But almost every decision her mom has made through Fern’s life—even the bad ones—have been because she wants to figure out a way to create the best future for Fern.
Why do you think some young people can show such resilience, strength, and courage during difficult life situations; sometimes even more than the adults in their lives?
I think kids have a special kind of openness that many adults lose over time. Openness to the world at large, to the new, to the scary, to forgiveness and to change. It’s one of the reasons I love writing for kids. I am constantly amazed and inspired by them, for the very reasons you list here: their resilience, strength, and courage. All of us should remember to look to kids for a reminder of how to be.
What do you think Fern is doing at the present time?
I think she’s reading a library book, listening to K-pop, and snacking on lemon and raspberry petit fours!
