Thirteens by Kate Alice Marshall

How I Heard About It:
*I was able to download an electronic version of the ARC of this middle-grade novel.  The story will be out in the world on August 18th of 2020.

What It Is About - FIVE Things You Need to Know:
1.  *The story takes place in a little quiet town where everyone is trying to keep a secret.

2.  *The story contains three young children that set out to solve the mystery.

3.  *Eleanor has just moved to Eden Eld after losing her mother.

4.  *She is about to turn thirteen and that number has significant meaning in the town of Eden Eld.

5.  *Eleanor, and two new friends Pip and Otto, realize they have a lot in common, and must work together to break an old curse that was put upon the town and its residents.

What I Thought Of It - Five Observations/Reflections:
1.  *This would be the perfect story to share with a class during the month of October.

2.  *As I read, I enjoyed the creepiness and suspense throughout the pages of the book.

3.  *I enjoyed the relationships between the three children and how they came to depend on each other.

4.  *The author did a terrific job of showing children fighting the good fight and doing what is right not only for themselves, but also for the greater good.

5.  *Even though the story is full of mystery and suspense, the plot is completely appropriate for the young reader.  The author doesn't insult the reader.

Who Should Read It:
*As I mentioned, this would be the perfect novel to share with a class during the month of October.  Readers in fourth and above would be ideal for the mystery.  I really think young readers, especially thirteen-year olds, will enjoy the spooky story.  Happy Reading!
