Deer Run Home by Ann Clare LeZotte

How I Came Across It... *Scholastic Press sent me a copy of this 2024 middle-grade novel written in verse. I spent my Sunday afternoon reading the story. The book will drop on October 1, 2024. What It's About - Five Things You Need to Know... *Effie is deaf and has recently moved out of her mother's home and in with her father.

*The only family member she can really rely on is her older sister.

*When a teacher notices some "signs" about Effie, she steps in and is granted temporary custody of her.

*While Effie lives with her teacher, she realizes what life can be like outside of her father's environment.

*Effie's well being is brought to a court of law where her future will be decided by a judge. What I Thought of It - Five Observations/Reflections... *This was my first time reading something by LeZotte and I found the free-verse to be powerful.

*The text was sparse, but each word was full of emotion and delivered a punch to the reader.

*I did think there was something missing from the text as the plot seemed to be missing something and the storyline moved a bit quick.

*I wasn't quite sure how the deer fit into Effie's story, but it could have been representing survival by both of them.

*This was a tough subject matter and the author did a wonderful job of covering it.

Who Should Read It... *For me, this is definitely a middle-school story as the subject matter is mature and quite serious. The plot deals with neglect and abuse. You should be aware of that before sharing the story with a young reader. Happy Reading!

The Secret of Honeycake by Kimberly Newton Fusco

How I Came Across It... *Knopf/Random House Children's Books sent me an ARC of this upcoming middle-grade novel. The book will drop in January 2025. I so enjoyed Chasing Augustus by Fusco so I was excited to dig in and see what she had in store for the reader this time around. What It's About - Five Things You Need to Know... *Hurricane first lost her mother, and now her older sister has to go away to take care of her tuberculosis.

*She finds herself living with her aunt who she has never met before.

*When Hurricane first arrives, she is as quiet as ever, but gradually finds her voice.

*With the help of a former soldier, a reclusive cat, and a boy who smells like fish, Hurricane learns how to use her voice to stand up for herself.

*Her goal is to get home to her older sister and her beloved dog, but it may not be as easy as she thought.

What I Thought of It - Five Observations/Reflections... *This was an enjoyable and pleasant historical fiction middle-grade story.

*Hurricane was an authentic, thoughtful, and spunky young girl who was enjoyable to read about.

*The supporting cast of characters rounded out the story because they brought such life to the pages.

*As with most young readers, I enjoyed the short chapters which made the 352 pages go by quickly.

*Even though there wasn't a whole lot of "action", the plot moved quickly and kept my interest. Who Should Read It... *I would recommend the novel to readers in grades four, five, and six. The story would also be ideal for students in middle-school. I also think the story would make for a strong class read aloud because there would be so much to discuss. Happy Reading!

Not Nothing by Gayle Forman

How I Came Across It... *A friend recommended this story to me. I got myself a copy, sat down, began reading, and was blown away when I finished the last page. What It's About - Five Things You Need to Know... *Twelve-year-old Alex has made a huge mistake and not must try to make it right.

*One-Hundred-Seven year old Josey is living his last days in a senior center with a story that lives with him everyday.

*When Alex begins volunteering at the senior home to make up for what he has done, he meets Josey.

*Josey begins to share his story with Alex about his life in Europe and meeting the love of his life.

*As hard as Alex would like to put his mistake behind him, he realizes it may not be as easy as he wishes.

What I Thought of It - Five Observations/Reflections... *This story has all the feels.

*I absolutely loved the characters of Alex and Josey.

*Author Gayle Forman did a brilliant job of bringing these two characters stories together.

*As I read, I enjoyed learning about Josey's past and how that past could help Alex with his present situation.

*There are so many incredible moments throughout the pages that will definitely bring a tear to your eye. Who Should Read It... *I actually think all adult readers would find this an incredible and heartwarming story. Young readers in grades five and above would definitely find the novel to be one they soon won't forget. Happy Reading!

How did you come to know Rami?
Once I understood that the story was really going to be about the mystery of self-discovery, figuring out who you are and how to share that with other people, how to connect with other people--I found Rami. He was the perfect character to help me explore those themes.

What do you think is his most admirable quality?
The fact that he is so observant. He notices things that other people often overlook, and he sees the world in a unique way because of that.

Is there anything you wish he would have changed or done differently in his story?
Oh gosh! Of course I wish he had more confidence in himself, but if he did, we wouldn't really have the same story, would we?

What do you think Rami can offer to other children that are experiencing similar situations to what he went through?
I hope he can show them that they aren't alone. That they deserve to be seen in all of their complexity. That their voices and ideas matter. That sometimes the thing that makes you feel different is actually the thing that in the end you may admire the most about yourself. That people want to hear what you have to say and share. I also hope they see the power in being represented in art and stories, and how art and stories can help us to connect with one another.

How did you research Rami and the circumstances he found herself in?
I did a lot of research about the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum heist. I'm obsessed with it! And I re-read a lot of my favorite books from when I was a kid (The Mixed Up Files of Mrs Basil E. Frankweiler, The Westing Game, etc) to get inspired to write in an expansive, arch + whimsical third person voice.

Do you and Rami share any similarities?
Yes! I was deeply insecure as a child, and often felt invisible.

What was the hardest scene to write about him?
The scene where he talks about how his old friends ditched and rejected him. That's such a painful experience--friendship break-ups--and it brought up a lot of hard memories from my own childhood.

Who do you think was his biggest supporter and why?
Ooh, I think that's a tie between his mother and Veda. His mother quietly encourages him by modeling how to be comfortable in your skin, make your own art, observe the world and be curious. And Veda really sees him, and helps to pull him out of his shell.

Why do you think some young people can show such resilience, strength, and courage during difficult life situations; sometimes even more than the adults in their lives?
Young people are amazing. They have so much grit. I think it's because being young is really hard. You are figuring out who you are. You are figuring out what you have to say and how you want to say it. This is tough work. But I think going through that every day prepares them well to be resilient in tough life situations. They are so focused on becoming--on the present moment--and that energy helps to move them forward.

What do you think Rami is doing at the present time?
I hope he is making art, and I hope he is sharing it with his friends, like Veda. I also hope he is visiting Agatha sometimes.
