Dear Mothman
by Robin Gow

(March 21, 2023)

How did you come to know Noah?
I drew a lot from my own experiences as a young person. I usually see my characters as fragments or pieces of myself.

What do you think is his most admirable quality?
I appreciate his ability to explore nuances. Noah feels the world deeply and reflects often.

Is there anything you wish they would have changed or done differently in their story?
Nope! I'm really happy with how the story unfurls. I do think sometimes about a sequel though because I miss the characters and I'd love to explore being in their shoes again.

What do you think Noah can offer to other children that are experiencing similar situations to what they went through?
I think he can offer a story of how multiple emotions and experiences can be true at once. Noah is both grieving the loss of his best friend and building new beautiful moments with friends he's making through the story. It can be hard to feel joy after loss but Noah shows we often feel these emotions side by side. I think Noah can also teach us to explore the unknown and that believing in otherworldly things like monsters and cryptids can teach us a lot about ourselves and the world around us.

How did you research Noah and the circumstances they found themselves in?
I didn't do much hard research for the book because it draws really heavily on my lived experience as an autistic trans person. I also lived in the town where the story is set. The most research I did was actually around Mothman stories because I wanted to get the legend right. I also have worked most of my adult like with the LGBTQIA2+ community and our youth and I consider youth some of my best teachers.

Do you and Noah share any similarities?
A whole lot! I'm also a very emotional and poetic person. Growing up, I often felt isolated and alone because of being queer and neurodivergent. I also am very interested in cryptids, ghost stories, and anything spooky.

What was the hardest scene to write about them?
I struggled to write scenes where people don't understand Noah. School was a really difficult place for me as a young person and so I felt like I relived some of those hard memories of my own to explore Noah's relationship with school.

Who do you think was Noah’s biggest supporter and why?
Probably Hanna. She's sweet and kind and encourages Noah to be who he is. Though, I wanted to say Mothman.

Why do you think some young people can show such resilience, strength, and courage during difficult life situations; sometimes even more than the adults in their lives?
I think young folks are often our most creative. I think it comes from having less time to be steeped in the systems of our world that work to quash our imaginations.

What do you think Noah is doing at the present time?
He's definitely hanging out with his friends and maybe going on an adventure to look for the Squonk (that's a cryptid from the Pennsylvania forests).
